Banner advertising use to be very popular many years ago
before the rise of Google. Many of the search engines had
banners all over the place. Also many of the popular web
sites also had many banners. However, with the rise of
Google that did not use these obtrusive form of adverts it
became very apparent that the fall of this form of
advertising had come. Up until that point people were
charging astronomical rates to display these adverts on
their web sites.
However, with every web site looking like a flea market the
click through rates for most adverts fell below 0.5% and
consequently very few web sites were still using this form
of advertising.
Recently this type of advertising has made a come back. In
this article I would like to go over some tips that you can
follow that will help you to get the most out of
advertising this way.
Most people will place adverts with the big networks.
Unfortunately, this will result in over priced ads that
rarely will get the results that you want. The secret to
using this method effectively is to find small to medium
sites related to your niche market. Contact them
individually and ask if you can place banners on their
sites. It is very important to negotiate a good deal. If
you do this right you will most probably pay only a third
of the price that they display on their web site.
Just make sure that you design an effective banner. What I
have found to work best for me is to have a simple design
on a white background as this makes it look like content
and definitely will improve your click through rate. Also
use underlined blue text with a catchy slogan as this
represents a hyperlink and will improve conversion.
